- Soft, scrunchable plastics like plastic bags, bread bags, plastic wrappers and glad wrap are difficult products to recycle through a kerbside recycling bin and often get mixed up with other lightweight streams like paper at the recovery facility, causing contamination of other materials such as paper and cardboard. These items will no longer be accepted in kerbside recycling bins in Western Australia. You can take your plastic shopping bags to major supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths, or IGA for recycling – look for the soft plastics recycling collection bin at the front of the store. If you're not able to drop them off, place into your red-topped bin. Please don’t put your recycling in plastic bags in your recycling bin. We can't tell what is in there so the bag is pulled from the conveyor and sent to landfill.
Try to avoid using plastic bags wherever you can. Use reuseable shopping bags instead and get yourself into the habit of putting them straight back in the car or your bag once you have unpacked the shopping.
